Baylor Showdown
Posted by tom | Jul 24, 2005The Baylor Showdown has reminded me how a college's return to faith is only accomplished by the grace of God. Reflecting on the transformation of Grove City College, the alma mater of both Theresa and myself, reminds me what a blessing it has been to know followers of Christ w/the passion, determination, and the sacrifical lifestyle necessary for being part of such a Kingdom endeavor. I was surprised by the omission of Grove City College in the recent article on the Renaissance of Christian Colleges, but maybe that has to do w/not being a member of the Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) and finding itself outside the typical orbit of evangelicalism . . . which is not all a bad thing.
My prayers are w/Baylor University and the next steps which lay ahead of them. In particular, I hope that the work of David Lyle Jeffery in medieval studies, Bible, and literature continue to flourish. I have found him an inspirational figure since coming across him at the Pew Younger Scholars Program in the summer of 1995. My prayers are also with Nathan Hatch, former provost of the University of Notre Dame, who began as president of Wake Forest University on July 1. This Baptist school in North Carolina, known more for their big university bang for their small size and Demon Deacon Basketball star Tim Duncan (FYI: their field hockey program is even better than their basketball program), should have a powerful encounter w/such a respected historian of the evangelical movement and advocate for integrating faith and scholarship. May God give Hatch, the Board of Trustess, the students, and the alumni the grace and vision to redemptively step into the future.
