Freedom!
Posted by tom | Oct 7, 2005Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
Yesterday, Ryan suggested we take 15 minutes to reflect upon how we understand Freedom in the Gospel. A number of things came to my mind:
Freedom to be children of God, to find/root our identity in Christ Freedom to love, our blindness toward others/neighbor taken awayOne student commented, I am increasingly compelled to do the right thing, even if I don't want to. I feel like I am becoming a slave to righteousnes.
Another shared, I have been trusting a lot more in myself than I should. I need to reprioritize my life and put God first each day.
Each morning I (Tom) meet with 4-6 grad students for a time of conversation, Scripture, and prayer over breakfast. They span the fields of music performance, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, materials science and engineering, and information security. What a joy to see them day-by-day grow in the freedom of the Gospel! Please take a few moments on a weekday morning between 8:30-9:30am, to join us in prayer for the work of God through the people of God on CMU's campus. Specifically pray for
1. PhD students to receive direction and support regarding their final projects. Masters students to focus on their classwork and job search preparations. For all students to find their identity in Christ and not in their success/failure or peer group/departmental acceptance. Note: We'll be exploring Success and Failure in the University at Pittsburgh's Graduate and Faculty Ministry Conference.
2. Interactions with those from other faiths, especially the number of scholars from Asia. At yesterday's Colossians study, several students voiced a desire to learn more about world religions, practical atheism, and Church history to better engage classmates in conversation regarding the Gospel. Note: this might be a theme for us to explore in the coming semester. If you have particular materials/speakers that we should consider utilizing, please let us know.
3. Eden. See below.
