Eden's therapy annual evaluation, nearly miraculous, more

Posted by tom | Jun 30, 2006

Hi All,

Thought I'd update you all on the latest things Eden's been up to, starting with her annual therapy evaluation. The organization that provides her services does this evaluation every year and it's been a year already, since we started Physcial Therapy at least. She had this yesterday. All her therapists come to our house and together put together a progress report and evaluate (using the Battelle Developmental Inventory) and write new goals for her. Here are the results for Eden at 16 months old (click below for the details) . . .

Cognitive Development (thinking, problem solving, play skills, etc.)--13 months

Communiction Development (understanding and expressing wants, needs, and ideas)--Expressive language 13 mo.; Receptive Language 12-14 mo.
Social or Emotional Development (engaging others and interacting in the environment)--13 mo.
Physical Development (large and small muscle development)--
Fine motor, left hand: 9mo.
Fine motor, right hand: 7 mo.
Gross motor: 7mo.
Adaptive Development (self-help skills such as feeding, dressing, etc.)--
Left side: 16 mo.
Right side: 13 mo.
Many of you ask what we do in therapy, so I'm going to list some of the goals we have for Eden for this coming year.
1. Crawling on hands and knees
2. Cruising on furniture
3. Walking independently
4. Identify pictures in books by pointing
5. Use two-handed toys
6. Grasp and release objects with her right hand
7. Use 20+ words/signs
8. Identify people/objects/actions in her environment

Hope that's informative to you :) All of Eden's therapists were really impressed with the progress she's made this year. And they all expressed how they're going to miss her when we move. I've come to appreciate each of them and will miss them too.

In other news, I've been a little neglectful in keeping you updated. In the beginning of June Eden had another hearing test (behavioral hearing test) and she did very well. I didn't receive the report from it yet, but she was able to hear and respond (by looking for the sound) to almost all the sounds they played. Some were very, very soft and she didn't respond to them. The test does not discriminate which ear she's hearing from nor the level of hearing in each ear, but it tells us her functional hearing, which in her case is very good. In a sense, the particulars of how much, if any she can hear from the left ear is inconsequential to the "management" of her hearing. That just means that it wouldn't change what we do to help her right now. Relatedly, the ear tubes are working, as evidenced by the "goop" that was draining out of her ears a few weeks ago. Now for infection she can have ear drops instead of oral antibiotics which is nice.

And this week she visited the opthamologist again. In his words, the results of the last MRI were almost miraculous. He checked her vision and concluded she is slightly nearsighted (~ minus 1), and a little more so in the left eye. If she had to drive right now she'd need glasses, but for her activities at this age, she's fine to wait until around age 3. That's a relief to me as she won't even tolerate a hat, much less glasses! We'll continue to patch the right eye 1/2 hr. per day. Of course, when we move and see a new opthamologist he may have a different opinion, but that's a few months away. The doctor was very pleased with the movement of Eden's left eye (the one that had surgery), but still didn't rule out the possiblity of another eye muscle surgery when she's older. And since she's been steadily regaining nerve function we'll continue to wait and see how much she regains with regard to her blink. There is a procedure they can do if necessary to help the eye to close, but he wants to wait.

I think that's all! We look forward to showing off our miracle girl (s)to family over the weekend and friends at our July 9th (2-4pm, Schenley Park Ice Rink Party Room . . . don't forget to RSVP to us).
