Superman: The 3-D Savior
Posted by tom | Jul 1, 2006Last night, I had the opportunity w/a few friends to see Superman Returns in 3-D at an IMAX theatre (note: only 3-D for selected scenes). It was an odd rewrite of the original movie series (I won't spoil it for you), but in general I liked the film. Although the director, Bryan Singer, comes from a secular Jewish perspective, he could not help but emphasize the savior elements of the Superman ethos. The world doesn't need a savior. And neither do I encapsulates the theme of film. Although the tradition is somewhat challenged by Lois and Richard in this film, I have to laregly agree w/Peter T. Chattaway
But we shouldn't make too much of this sort of thing. The Superman movies have never shown anyone actually following Superman's inspiring lead; if anything, they have shown people waiting passively for Superman to rescue them. What's more, the Superman of the movies has shown a remarkable tendency to shrug off his responsibilities -- first abandoning his powers (and thus the safety of the world) so he could sleep with Lois in Superman II, and now abandoning the world altogether for several years prior to the events of Superman Returns.
We are not called to be passive receivers of the work of our Savior, but to step forward by the power of the Spirit to be about advancing the Father's Kingdom. And that looks a lot different than the action hero world inhabited by Superman, even when alien superhero becomes more human.
Enjoy the film, but if it's not 3-D, you might just wait to rent it on DVD. Kevin Spacey's quite the villian and Lois Lane's boy has a lot to offer our world in the future :-) If you're really excited join the fan club.
