New apologtics resources
Posted by tom | Aug 25, 2006Just finished Jim Sire's A Little Primer on Humble Apologetics (thank-you Jim, let's make more memories!). Partway through N.T.Wright's Simply Christian (thank-you to Chris Nichols for his strong recommendation during his presentations at the Mid-Atlantic Staff Conference) and Preston Jones' Is Belief in God Good, Bad, or Irrelevant? (thank-you to IVCF-CMU undergrad staff Jason Toman for his positive review). Just placed an order for Justin Barrett's Why Would Anyone Believe in God? (thank-you to F&M Philosophy Professor Michael Murray for bringing this piece to my attention, looking forward to hearing Justin in October).
My initial thoughts . . .
Way to go Jim! A Little Primer on Humble Apologetics is just what the title states. For those looking for such a piece, order it today :-) For those seeking to build upon this foundation read Naming the Elephant alongside The Universe Next Door. If you've already reached that point and your frustrated by conversations, check out Sire's earlier 2006 piece Why Good Arguments Often Fail.
For those in regular conversation with those who argue that all phenomena can be explained in terms of natural causes and laws, then John Brown History Professor Preston Jones' adapted email exchange with punk rocker Greg Gaffin (who has a PhD from Cornell in which he considered evolution, atheism, and naturalism) is a stimulating, fun must read.
It will take me a few more pages to see whether I agree w/Anne Rice as to whether N.T.Wright's Simply Christian goes beyond C.S. Lewis's great classic Mere Christianity, but I do know what is transformative from Lewis and Wright comes from the Light of Christ shining forth through their writing. Praise God for Anne's return to Christ, may her writing be simply Christian by being offered up to the Lord instead of vampires :-)
In our Father's hands, we place our fall conversations which by the power of the Holy Spirit point to the Son as the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
