How Long Can Any Man Fight the Darkness

Before He Finds It

In Himself

--

The Greatest Battle

Lies

Within

As I commented the other day, I find this the most compelling aspect of the Gospel. We are all fallen, in need of a Savior. Even the extremely gifted human beings which strive to care for our broken cities, cultures, and world cannot do it alone. Each and every one of us require the daily grace of God given to us through His Word, His Holy Spirit, His People, and the Common Grace which surrounds us to enable the likeness of Christ in to shine forth in our vocation, family, neighborhood, world . . . How do you grapple with the darkness within?

Scheduling an August 17 visit to 'da Burgh to assist w/the CMU Grad Orientation Fair. Pray that we'll make good connections w/incoming students and reconnect w/incoming student from both CMU and Pitt that have already emailed us regarding their interest. Also pray that I'll be able to wrap-up some details regarding 2006-2007 conferencing, special events, and regular gatherings (eg., CMU Bible study, CMU book discussion group, CMU prayer group, Pitt Bible study, and a proposed CMU faculty-grad student seminar). Click here for a schedule of activities/events of not only our ministry, but also those of other ministries and local congregations with whom we partner.

Why Good Arguments

Posted by tom | Aug 4, 2006

Often Fail. Jim Sire can explain why, but can't make your good arguments never fail. Here's Breakpoint's recommendation for Jim's newest piece equipping one to Make a More Persuasive Case for Christ.

I'm also hoping to take some time w/Jim Learning to Pray Through the Psalms this fall.

Science Fiction, myth, Tom's favorites?

Posted by tom | Aug 3, 2006
Ok. So I don't know what to call this category. I've just transitioned it from Star Wars to Star Wars vs. Star Trek to Science Fiction. Can you come up w/a helpful category title to include Comics like Superman, LOTR, and Narnia and not travel all the way to fiction, acknowledging that only a few of these pieces would qualify as myth(More)

Eden is doing remarkably well. She has been all over the first floor of Tom's parent's house. Tom's mom is amazed at the progress she's made since we arrived here. Eden has so much more space to roam in Tom's parent's house and more people to help her walk. Walking (with help) is her preferred activity these days. Great for her, back-breaking for us! But she's doing really well and she loves the attention of all the family which have as she bangs on the piano and opens/closes cabinets . . . what a joy to see her continued development. Theresa thinks that she's found a good pediatrician for the kids -- recommended by a friend from college who lives in the area.

Logging into Star Trek XI

Posted by tom | Aug 3, 2006

So can my fan friends tell me any inside information on what's going on with Star Trek XI besides what can be found at a site like ifmagazine? Considering Theresa mourns the loss of Alias not to be filled be Abram's Lost (and MI-III wasn't even given a chance), maybe I could convince Theresa to boldly go where she has refused to go before.

The more students

have the chance to express their doubts in high school, the higher their faith maturity and spiritual maturity. Thus the key is not to get kids to say the right things before they graduate to the big bad world, but to help them think through the tough questions and verbalize some of their faith and personal struggles before they hit the ups and downs of the college transition. --Kara Powell, the director of the Center for Youth and Family Ministry at Fuller Theological Seminary

The lion, the witch and the college campus is a must read. Written by Derek Melleby, a friend from the Geneva Higher Education Program who works for Coalition for Christian Outreach (CCO) and the Center for Parent and Youth Understanding (CPYU), this piece includes an interview w/David C. Downing, C.S. Lewis scholar at Elizabethtown College. For parents/students in the transition process (and youth ministers in general), don't miss the College Transition Initiative Resources.

You Suck which is why you need Jesus

Finally! An evangelistic t-shirt that really engages people. -- IVCF staff friend

How true it is. I found the most convincing part of the Gospel the daily frustration w/regard to how much not only the world and relationships around me fall short, but also how much I fall short due to the sin and brokenness in my own life. As I wake up this morning and touch my feet on the floor, only Jesus provides me with proper perspective and direction for how I engage w/my own person, Theresa, our girls, my parents (w/whom we're living), the campus, faculty, students, our local congregation, my vocation, the creation, etc.

Scripture or theology or morals. We are just Episcopalians. -- Donna Bott, Episcopal Voices of Central Florida. (Quote forwarded to me by an IVCF staff friend)

Brief off-the-cuff response: I am just a follower of Christ. I am simply called to reflect and share the Word who not only came in Person but continues to provide Light upon His Word through His Body, the very People of God across time and space . . . incarnated and reproduced in concert throughout the creation.

Father grant your followers as individuals and as the Body of your Son the grace to open, receive, and live in your Word by the power of your Spirit.
