Fasting from self-justification
Posted by tom | Dec 12, 2006Last week I had the opportunity to take a Spiritual Formation Seminar on Early Christian Spirituality at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary with Dale Allison and Martha Robbins. Lots to share regarding this time.
During my fast, I gave up to God the need to justify time away for renewal in the midst of building a house, preparations for an Adult Education series, pioneering a new ministry, etc. God met me again and again during silence, reflection, and prayer during the beginning of Advent.
In addition, Theresa (without prodding) once again re-inforced my need for time away to receive direction during this time of signficant transition, a delegate involved in Higher Education and one of the course instructors affirmed the vision for faculty ministry which I shared, and I had opportunity to connect deeply with several friends in Pittsburgh.
Yes, I am always in the Presence of God. Yes, I am active in my work for Him. Yes, there are times to go into the desert and seek communion with the Holy One. Yes, I have returned with a Word from the Lord regarding next steps for our family, neighborhood, and ministry. More to come . . . and for my friends in 'da Burgh, more visits in the spring to pray, connect, and step forward in Christ.
PS. Steelers won 2x when I was in town this past week (and they also beat the Chiefs convincingly when I was in the area for Homecoming). How about that and they did so much better when I was in town last year, talk about coincidences ;-)
