Christmas in September?
Posted by tom | Sep 13, 2007Why would 15 or so followers of Christ begin discussing the Practice of a Christ-centered Christmas in September? Here's what they had to say:
Christmas at Tom's parents house
1. Memories of the Christmas season leading to the question of What is it now for the younger generation(s)?
2. How does one address the hustle and the bustle of the Christmas season?
3. What are alternative gift giving practices which our family can continue to develop in the coming year (e.g., Angel Tree, Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoebox, etc)?
4. How does one address Santa Claus, toys, and broader commercialism/materialism with the little ones (and the extended family, friends, colleagues with the cultural gift giving and seasonal food expectations)?
5. How does one begin, continue, and enrich meaningful, Christ-centered traditions with one's children (e.g., Birthday Cake for Jesus, various resources provided by organizations such as Focus on the Family and others)?
6. How does one balance all the seasonal activities and use discernment in participation, even one's local congregation [great to have the white elephant recognized during the first week of conversation]?
