Harry Potter and the Christian Critics

Mars Hill Audio's Stronger than Death, linked to a helpful First Things piece Harry Potter and the Christian Critics. If this is a topic of interest to you, I'd encourage to take some time to read them over. Would love to read your comments/responses.

I read the First Things article, and I thought Mark Shea (the author) was, while correct, overstating things a bit. I personally have not seen very much Christian anti-Potter rhetoric, especially when compared to Christian attacks on Dungeons & Dragons, heavy metal, and [insert pop culture fad here] during the 1980's.

Also, Shea refers to Gandalf as "born with the talent for magic". Is this accurate? I'm not the biggest LOTR expert around, but in Tolkien's other writings, isn't it revealed that Gandalf, Saruman, and the other "wizards" are actually something more akin to archangels than human beings?
