L'abri Today

Last Monday, the writings of Francis Schaeffer and the continuing work of L'Abri emerged as a breakfast topic among a group of guys. For those of you with interest, here's an update on L'Abri in Switzerland from a friend of mine who recently visited:

we talked briefly with schaeffer's son-in-law when we first arrived, and got an idea of what's happening there now... many hurting, mostly young people, who need an extended time to sort things out in an accepting atmosphere... many were burned by charismatic groups, dogmatic fundamentalists, mainline liberals churches with no answers.... the director said in a meeting, "we are not here to impose a system on you"... they give them a lot of space... they don't advertise... very laid back... there are a couple lectures a week... worship sunday.... no attempt to convert, or force them.... not preachy in any way... diverse group there... wonderful people to be around, time to think and pray and study and talk .... no cultic atmosphere whatever

P.S. How strange that we should ordinarily feel compelled to hide our wounds when we are all wounded! Community requires the ability to expose our wounds and weaknesses to our fellow creatures. It also requires the ability to be affected by the wounds of others... But even more important is the love that arises among us when we share, both ways, our woundedness. -- M. Scott Peck, A Different Drum, Culture is not optional (cino) posting.
