10/18 Baby Eden Update

Posted by tom | Oct 18, 2007

I [Tom] had the opportunity to take Eden to her WIC appointment in Lancaster on Tuesday morning.  She was quite active and resourceful as she pushed a kids chair across the play area to get from one table to the other table for our conversation times in the waiting room.  She didn't even make a sound when she had her finger pricked for the blood test, a little too much familiarity with the medical world!  But she had lots to share about the Bugs Bunny bandaid for her boo-boo and applied her sticker (for doing such a good job) to her back as if it was a nursery nametag.

In the car, when I chatted with her she responded, I know.  I know.  Apparently this has become a popular part of car conversation, starting with Hayley and Ellen several days previous.  She is using more phrases, verbs, adjectives, and even posing questions.  E.g., I ate momma breakfast daddy.  My, mine, me.  Pray for perseverance as we work more on descriptive words e.g., big/small, colors, facial expressions while painting pumpkins.  Pray for Eden to pick up words that we're modeling, e.g., eat, sleep.

With regard to walking, I noticed in the WIC office Eden taking more steps as released hold of support of the chair she was pushing to climb into the chair at the table.  We see these transitional steps around the house as she releases hold of her stroller to take her baby out of the stroller after giving her a short walk, moves from her play table to the sofa (and back), and moves from stroller to sofa (and back).  To assist Eden with the alignment of her feet and improve her balance in standing with upright mobility our PT has recommended we invest in a support product offered by Sure Step Orthotics  In addition, we are to encourage Eden to use the stroller to walk her baby with decreased assistance to steer the stroller to the living room, to use the posterior walker to walk across the living room without assistance, and to transition from floor to standing with minimal support through 1/2 kneeling.  Continue to pray for strength and balance for her to walk firmly.

As to OT, she continues to practice dressing/undressing herself and her baby.  She has begun to pick up puzzle pieces successfully with her right index finger 1/3 of the time, when in therapy.  Ellen has been a big help in attending to Eden's care for her babies, exploration of puzzles, work in her kitchen area.  We also she this high activity when she visits my family and plays in my sister's Barbie world.  Praise God for Ellen's love and care for her sister. Pray for this relationship to continue to flourish. Pray for us to find ways to occupy Hayley so that she doesn't migrate toward the computer or the TV, at present we've checked out a number of books on tape to which she can read along in order to improve her reading skills at the same time.

    Hi Tom,

My apologies. I need to reschedule our breakfast. A congregational matter needs my attention on Friday morning.

Please call me next week and we we can find another time.

Hope the symposium goes well on Saturday.
