Who are you? Who am I?
Posted by tom | May 19, 2008Questions such as these have been part of a number of situations over the past couple of weeks (Note: I guess they're always in the background if they're not in the foreground). By the providence of God, Brethen-in-Christ World Missions encourages Missions Affiliates to read of William Backus & Marie Chapian's Telling Yourself The Truth: Finding Your Way Out of Depression, Anxiety, Fear, Anger, and Other Common Problems by Applying the Principles of Misbelief Therapy. I have found some particular sections helpful in a number of conversations, including some with myself :-)
What is Misbelief Therapy?
putting the truth into our value systems, philosophies, demands, expectations, moralistic and emotional assumptions as well as into the words we tell ourselves. The Bible says it is the truth that sets man fee. Jesus Christ is the living Truth. When we inject the truth into our every thought, taking a therapeutic broom and sweeping away the lies and misbeliefs which have enslaved us, we find our lives radically changed for the happier better . . . truth as it is in Jesus is a teachable way of freedom which leads to wholeness, restored function, and freedom from neurosis. -- From the Introduction.
The book has been reminding me to fill up on the truth, i.e., my relationship with the Father through the Word of God as given to me by the work of His Son, His Spirit, and the larger learning community of the people of God through time and geography. And furthermore the responsibility as a one united to Christ to extend the Presence of God, God's Word, and God's people in my house/extended family, community/campus mission, local assembly/larger affiliation . . . and by God's grace as part of His Kingdom, to the very ends of the earth. Come quickly Lord Jesus.
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. He will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust . . . Amen -- Psalm 91
