Three of the best books I've seen in a long time
Posted by tom | Sep 12, 2008Check out one faculty's best books reading list, from the summer as he prepared for the fall term. May many other followers of Christ pick-up these texts as they witness to the reality and Person of Christ in their neighborhood. I can vouch for the first and third, anyone desire to send me a copy of A Scandalous Freedom by Steve Brown? Note: Click Simply Christian for a summary of N.T. Wright's presentation at Georgetown and click Following Christ for details regarding InterVarsity's upcoming Graduate & Faculty Ministry Conference at which Wright will be a plenary speaker.
I Once Was Lost by Everts and Schaupp (I assume all Intervarsity staff have read this already) ... so much practical wisdom on reaching postmodern students ... the thresholds from distrust and unbelief through commitment ... and for religious people who are disappointed with the God they thought was the real god [Note from Tom: I Once Was Lost is published by InterVarsity Press (IVP)].
Steve Brown's A Scandalous Freedom brings a new understanding of the freedom God is giving us in Christ ... holiness does not come by trying harder ... guilt trips and the feeling that God is always angry (at least mildly) with us requires a new understanding of who God is ... as you know, Steve Brown is now teaching at Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS) Orlando ... he talks about the death of our dreams, the idols we have clinged to that we thought were God inspired ... the common ideas about God that drive believers to despair (the "magical santa claus god" of those who try to appear happy, continually praising Jesus, quick with cliches) ... and the "abusive god" who brings tragedy into our lives for no good reason
NT Wright's Surprised By Hope ...Tim Keller, when he spoke in Pittsburgh, encouraged everyone there to get this book...
