Quotes from "They Found the Secret"/Andrew Murray responds to trial/testing

Posted by tom | Jul 28, 2009

As I mentioned in Circumcision of the Heart, I'm preparing for The Brethren in Christ Theology of Salvation, taught by Dr. Luke L. Keefer, Jr.  They Found the Secret, by V. Raymond Edman, is among the required readings.

They Found the Secret (V. Raymond Edman, Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 1960)

Over the course of the next several days, maybe it will be weeks, I'll share some quotes from They Found the Secret and then move onto the other required readings.  Note:  Since I'll be writing some papers on salvation and testimonies of the work of God, I'm interested in any comments you have regarding the topic as a whole, the specific quote given, and/or the author of the quote.  Let's begin with Andrew Murray's (1828–1917) response to a time of trial/testing as recorded by Amy Carmichael (1867–1951).

Amy Carmichael wondered if he [Andrew Murray] was as good as his books, and found that he was even better. "For," she said, “there was not only good news, there was a delicious dry humor, dauntless courage, and the gentleness and simplicity of a dear child. And he was very loving. He never seemed to be tired of loving."

Then something painful happened to Mr. Murray, Miss Carmichael records that this is how he met it.

"He was quiet for a while with his Lord, then he wrote these words for himself:

First, he brought me here, it is His will that I am in this strait [i.e., hard] place: in that fact I will rest.

Next, he will keep me here in His love and will give me grace to behave as His child.

Then, He will then make the trial a blessing, teaching me the lessons He intends for me to learn and working in me the grace He means to bestow.

Last, in his good time He can bring me out again -- how and when He knows.

Let me say I am here,
1. By God’s appointment
2. In His keeping
3. Under His training
4. For His time"

Such a story is timeless. May it help someone else as it has helped some of us. Not once only; but, often!

I have been searching for this exchanged life, for a transformation, knowing predominantly Christians do not look much different than the rest of the world and we should look radically different. This book has spoken right to my desire, particularly the practical testimony of Charles Trumbull. As at the moment I seem to be on this quest by myself, desiring the exchanged life with the reality of companionship with Jesus, and as you are possibly in a community of like minded Christians, are you finding people who have had this experience that seems predominantly lost to the modern church?

Yes, I too am longing to find others who want more than what we are seeing in just about every church and every christian I know. I have not read the book, "They found the secret" yet. I have only read some excerpts of it, but would like to buy it. But so far, I love Hudson Taylor's testimony. His speaks to me so much. I can relate. How I would love to find likeminded believers!
