IVCF/Groshes: Fall Mission Under Way

Posted by tom | Sep 22, 2009

In summary, the two things necessary to thrive in school and after graduation:  read/query the Word of God AND have fellowship with the people of God no matter the work load.  If you can’t do the two above, then quit school.  Don’t become narrow and seek accolades.  Before moving for your job, make sure there is a good match with a local congregation.  Don’t focus on making money, limit your hours to be involved with community, church, family.  Take time to interact with your patients -- From Tom's notes on Keys of Thriving (Not Just Surviving!), http://blog.emergingscholars.org/2009/09/keys-of-thriving-not-just-surviving/, a PSU-Hershey’s Christian Medical Society lunch outreach lecture by Dr. Joe Kearns, MD, Emergency Medicine.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We rejoice in your continued intercession! The LORD has sustained our family through a full August followed by the launch of the new academic year for our kids & those with whom I minister on campus. In addition to weekly visits to PSU-Hershey Medical Center (Tuesday lunch outreach, evening leadership team meeting, men's Bible study; Thursday noon time prayer) and Millersville (Wednesday faculty/staff lunch discussion of The Truth Project), I have the following on my plate:

  1. writing and networking for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship's Emerging Scholars Network.  In addition to blog posts at http://blog.emergingscholars.org and the development of resource materials, I'm working on drawing together a network of Christian scholars in Central PA.  This includes a 1 x term lunch co-sponsored by our local congregation, Elizabethtown Brethren in Christ. By God's grace this will begin by serving scholars who have expressed interest at Bucknell, Dickinson, Elizabethtown, F&M, Lancaster Bible College, Messiah, Millersville, PSU-Harrisburg, PSU-Hershey, and U. of Delaware.  As the network gathers strength, we'll expand invitations on those campuses and tap into networks on other campuses.
  2. brainstorming with members of the Graduate & Faculty Ministry staff and InterVarsity Press regarding special projects/initiatives.
  3. designing and directing the annual Mid-Atlantic Graduate Student Winter Retreat, February 5-7, Camp Donegal, Airville, PA.
  4. serving on the staff for Urbana Student Missions Convention, December 27-31, www.urbana.org.  Drop me an email if you're planning to be at Urbana, I'd love to connect.

In case you haven't already downloaded our September prayer calendar (Note:  new calendars go up every month on http://groshlink.net/static/about), I've attached it to this email [Note: go to link, if you'd like to receive my update via email drop me a note].  Several posts which share about our recent labors include:

  1. Keys of Thriving (Not Just Surviving!) -- Notes from a PSU-Hershey Medical Center Christian Medical Society speaker.
  2. What does it mean to be a Christian physician?  -- Notes from a PSU-Hershey Medical Center Christian Medical Society speaker.

  4. Continued financial provision. By God's grace we finished the 2008-2009 books in the black.  We rejoice in His continuing provision through the encouragement, gifts, prayer, and financial support of his people.  If your small group, local congregation, or ministry would have interest in having us share about our work over the course of the next several months, please be in touch so we can set our calendar.

One more day by the grace of God alone,
