What's your Christian Hipster Quotient?

Posted by tom | Jul 20, 2010

How do you score on the Christian Hipster Quotient (CHQ), http://www.hipsterchristianity.com/quiz.php? Note:  A feature of the website for the soon to be released Hipster Christianity: When Church and Cool Collide (Brett McCraken. Baker Books. 2010), http://www.hipsterchristianity.com/about.php. Other features include profile pics, http://www.hipsterchristianity.com/anatomy.php, and a chapter download, http://www.hipsterchristianity.com/freeChapter.php.

I'm sure that it will not surprise many that I have a Low CHQ.  But what do you think about the accuracy of the below description?

Your Christian Hipster Quotient:
68 /120

Low CHQ. You probably belong to the purpose-driven, seeker-sensitive, Hawaiian shirt-wearing Christian establishment, even though you are open to some of the "rethinking Christianity" stuff. You seem to like edginess in some measure but become uneasy when your idea of Christian orthodoxy is challenged by some renegade young visionary who claims the virgin birth isn't necessary.

I think that the quiz makes too strong a point by the questions themselves.  A number are difficult for me to answer.  I wish 'none of the above,' had been a regular option or that all the questions didn't need to be answered for the quiz to calculate its results.

Yes, I'm encouraging you to take and reflect upon the quiz.  Yes, you are more than welcome to share your results/reflections and larger meditations on the relationship of Christ - the follower of Christ - the Body of Christ - Kingdom of God - Culture :-)

PS.  I returned to the quiz and by "re-reading" several questions, I bumped up my score ...

Your Christian Hipster Quotient:
72 / 120

High CHQ. You are a pretty progressive, stylish, hipster-leaning Christian, even while you could easily feel at home in a decidedly un-hip non-denominational church. You are conservative on some issues and liberal on others, and sometimes you grow weary of trendy "alt-Christianity." But make no mistake: You are a Christian hipster to at least some degree.

I wonder where the line is, maybe 70/120?

Out of curiosity, I took the quiz again projecting myself into how I understand what it means to be "a Christian hipster" and I only reached 86/120 (Note:  same text as above for 72/120.  I have a friend who reached 98/120 using such an approach).  I think that I didn't reach a higher score because of the issues/questions which begin to be raised about 'the context' in which the Christian hipster was raised and how the Christian hipster responds not only to the context of his/her upbringing, but to the larger culture in the process of high school/college. But maybe some of these factors are set, e.g. Christian hipster grows up in a stable Evangelical Christian family, congregation, and subculture.  Now I'm wound up for reading and responding to the book ;-)

HT:  Jason.  Note: Above material originally posted in a slightly different form on the BIC-TALK List (BIC = Brethren in Christ).

Some of the questions were odd, and so I answered as best as I could. I suspect my results were higher than reality due to me picking some answers since though none of the answers really fit my theology, I picked the one that matched my sense of humor. Result: 41, same paragraph text as you.

    Love the strategy Jon ;-)

There must be a 'no CHQ' -- for those who have never even interacted with "purpose-driven, seeker-sensitive, Hawaiian shirt-wearing Christian establishment" ... who have "continued in (possibly pressed on) in other streams" (maybe without exposure to Brett's definition of "Christian establishment") ... who find the CHQ "a joke" when it is described or when they take a look at the book/quiz.
