Soul of Christ, sanctify me ...
Posted by tom | Apr 22, 2011Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, inebriate me
Water from the side of Christ, wash me
Passion of Christ, strengthen me
O good Jesus, hear me
Permit me not to be separated from you
From the wicked foe, defend me
At the hour of my death call me home
And bid me come to you
That with your saints I may praise you
For ever and ever, Amen
-- Ignatius of Loyola.* "The Spiritual Exericses." Anima Christi (Soul of Christ). Trans. Louis J. Puhl, S.J.
HT: Tom.
*I came across the statement that although the first three lines of "Anima Christi" were used to open "The Spiritual Excercies," the words were taken from one of the most beautiful city gates of Alcazar of Seville (but who wrote the words for the gate). Also I read that the prayer may have been written by Pope John XXII (a brief summary of ideas I came across are given here). No matter the source, the prayer is a gift. Thank-you to our brother in Christ, Ignatius of Loyola for writing/copying the prayer and encouraging many beyond Seville (and Rome) through his writing and the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Wish on-line translations of "The Spiritual Excercises," e.g., CCEL, carried the prayer. Several translations are given here.
