Investing in a Strategic Ministry -- Year End Giving 2013

Posted by tom | Jun 24, 2013

On Saturday I had an uplifting conversation with a Carnegie Mellon alumnus who underscored to me that he invests in strategic ministries. And yes, he considers our labors with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA to be strategic. As I reflect upon it, the whole past week was filled with various alumni, Emerging Scholars, health care professionals, InterVarsity staff, and partners in ministry from over the course of our seventeen years of ministry sharing insights and resources to enable us to take significant steps forward to shape A Dialogical Campus Ministry. Such is the amazing work of the Kingdom of God! To God be the glory!

A quick update on our year end giving. We're almost "in the black." . . . The combination of our received/committed contributions places us within about $3,000 of our $100,000 annual ministry budget. Wow! God provides! This morning as we leave for Joni & Friends Family Camp '13, we depart with the confidence God provides through his people and that He longs for the Emerging Scholars Network and the Christian Medical Society/CMDA at the Penn State College of Medicine to extend the kingdom of God . . . the members to be salt, light, and leaven where they have been placed in mission.

If you have the ability to help our family close the gap to finish in the black on June 30 (or start our next fiscal year well), please contact us and/or go directly to https://donate.intervarsity.org/donate/to/Tom_Grosh.

Note 1: If you've already given toward this year end request, please consider this communication one which 'keeps you in the loop,' spurs you to intercede on our behalf, and/or encourages you to share our family's year request with others, e.g., missions committee, pastor, small group.

To Joni & Friends Family Camp '13

Summer 2012. Photo by & courtesy of Marci Weidler, Circle of Life Photography.Pray for our family as we journey to and participate in our second annual Joni & Friends Family Camp. Pray especially for our children to engage well through out the days . . . particularly as they add up to a week.

Last year we found great joy and refreshment in the Christ-centered time with families, friends (including not only new ones, but some surprising opportunity for deeper connections!), and the large support team. Pray for the camp leaders and support team to have insight/strength for all they'll navigate during this full week.

ESN Mission: Faith of collegians, FactChecker article

Posted by tom | Jun 21, 2013

In FactChecker: Does College Cause Young Adults to Lose Their Faith?, "Professor Smith observes three primary and very interesting reasons why the university is not the faith-shredder we imagine it to be:

1)    The increase in presence and effectiveness of campus-based ministries like Campus Crusade, InterVarsity, and Young Life.
2)    The increase of relativism and the decline of strict scientism, which allows for discussion of faith and spiritual speculation, similar to what Paul experienced at the Aeropagus.
3)    An increase in committed evangelical and Catholic faculty at secular universities in America who can serve as an encouragement and balance for Christian students." -- Glenn T. Stanton. "FactChecker: Does College Cause Young Adults to Lose Their Faith?" (The Gospel Coalition. 6/18/2013).

Not only more to read in the article (and the writings of Christian Smith), but there is much to engage with via cutting edge campus missions such InterVarsity's Emerging Scholars Network. I commend to you yesterday's ESN blog post Becoming a Thoughtful Christian in the Secular Academy and the on-going series on the campus mission. Furthermore, I thank-you for your support of my labors with InterVarsity's Emerging Scholars Network and the Christian Medical Socity (CMS)/CMDA at Penn State College of Medicine. If you have the ability to help us gather in the final $6,000 in our annual $100,000 ministry budget at year end (June 30), please drop us a line and/or visit our InterVarsity donation page.  To God be the glory!

ESN Blog Series on Rest

Do you desire rest? (6/18/2013) is my continuing of the conversation begun by What exhausts you? (Emerging Scholars Network blog. 6/17/2013) Enjoy. Comment. Share. . . .

What exhausts you?

Posted by tom | Jun 17, 2013

What exhausts you? (Thomas B. Grosh IV. Emerging Scholars Network Blog. 6/17/2013) extends beyond the campus AND digs into the larger question of "What gives you rest?" This may become a series to go along with the one I have begun on Aelred of Rievaulx's Spiritual Friendship (ESN Facebook Wall).
