IVCF/Groshes: Car and phones as year end concerns

Posted by tom | Dec 18, 2013

Note: Sent to our support team by email on 12/16. This evening I received the email that two cell phones are in the mail to address our concerns regarding cell phones. Thank-you!

What will be next? Join us in prayer for God's provision of a vehicle and/or the resources to invest in a vehicle which will be for the most part used for campus ministry. To God be the glory!

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. – Philippians 4:6

Dear Friends,

As the year comes to a close we reflect on the many ways that God has provided for our needs through your prayers, words of encouragement, acts of service and financial giving. It truly is humbling to live at the mercy of the generosity of God's people. We believe that as long as He wants us in ministry He will provide the means to do so. Frankly it's been a bit tougher this year. It seems that as the kids grow older, expenses rise with their ages. Theresa did take on a part time job this fall to help a little bit, but with Lily in half day kindergarten her available time is limited. We'll revisit that issue next year when all the kids will be in school full time.

Recently 2 larger and periodic needs have arisen and we are asking you to consider if and how you may be able to help.

  • The biggest is that Tom's car is no longer with us. It was a gift about 7 years ago and had close to 200,000 miles on it. We are looking at options but are also taking advice and leads that you may have. We're looking for a reliable, fuel-efficient, 4 door car. We do not have room in our budget for a monthly car payment.
  • The second need is for a new smart phone for Tom (and maybe Theresa). Tom relies on his phone quite a bit since he has a "mobile office". And currently his does not hold a charge reliably. But the age of the phone means that buying a new battery is not a wise option. Theresa's phone is mostly functional but frankly never worked very well. We're not up for Verizon contract renewal until March. The top priority is to replace Tom's phone. Theresa would consider downgrading to a "dumb phone" if that makes more financial sense.

If you would like to give financially to either of these 2 needs, we would be grateful. You could give an extra gift through InterVarsity if you prefer it to be tax deductible, https://donate.intervarsity.org/donate/to/Tom_Grosh. This will assist us in reaching our budget and exploring the possible increase of Tom's salary level in 2014. Or you could give directly to us, but not receive a tax deductible. We are also open to conversation regarding the donation of a car or phone, maybe you're currently doing a year end upgrade :)

We value your prayers regarding these issues. We wish that these "consumer needs" did not dominate our thoughts right now and are trying to trust that God will indeed provide for our NEEDS in His perfect timing.
